Great night last night with the Manchester Entrepreneur Group - Julie Meyers from Dragon’s Den online and Imran Hakim from iTeddy - most inspriational. Made me start thinking about investments - and then Julie had some great points.

Just did an event with Julie Meyers, the rather wonderful lady from the online Dragon’s Den programme as well as being one of the leading champions for entrepreneurship in Europe.

She’s got over 20 years investment and advisory experience helping start-up businesses, is the founder of Entrepreneur Country, co-founder of First Tuesday, and a weekly columnist in London’s City A.M. - she knows her stuff - and (and this is how I met her) she is founder and CEO of Ariadne Capital, who basically help ambitious companies become successful.

She herself is a marketing person, as she says she knows enough to be dangerous with finance and planning, but excels in marketing and seeing opportunities - two great qualities for the entrepreneur.

Julie Meyers and ideas about the world and investment:

The entrepreneur creates value - they always have throughout history - and we are the engine of society. This is a lovely viewpoint and it makes sense. As throughout history you see that capital follows ideas - not the other way around!

So it’s going to be important how you get this money….

She has some great top tips.

Remember when you are raising capital that financing is not the only goal - you also require a positive architecture for the firm where nothing will impede future financing or growth.

Financing should be completed to hit a milestone, not to survive for a period of time. There are five stages of company development: concept, product, validation, scale and sustainability or exit. Articulate how the money gets you to the next level, and most importantly, what you have done with no money already to get there.

Finally, put on your optimism every morning like a piece of clothing, so that you radiate success. People who achieve understand the mystery of success: there is no mystery - just passion, determination, and perseverance when everyone else quits.
